Moong Dal Halwa

Mong Dal Halwa is a classic recipe that is relished throughout Rajasthan. This calorie laden halwa is often prepared during the winter months, as it is supposed to keep the body warm. It is one of sweet dish of marwari sweet. Always serve small portions, because it is very heavy.


Split green gram skinless (soaked) 100gm

Deshi Ghee 100 gm

Sugar 100 gm

Water 2 cups

Mawa (khoya), crumbled 1 cup

Cardamom Powder 1 teaspoon

Almonds, Pistachios (sliced) 1/2 Cup


Soak the moong dal in water for 3 hours. Grind it and keep aside. Heat ghee in a pan and put the moong dal in it. Dissolve the saffron in 1 tablespoon of warm milk.

Heat ghee in a thick-bottomed pan and add the moong dal paste. Stirring continuously, over low heat till the dal turns golden brown. This needs time and patience.

Do not rush through this step. Add the sugar syrup and saffron milk.

cook on a slow flame till the ghee separates. Add mawa and cook till it dissolves.

Add the saffron and cardamom powder and mix well.

Garnish with sliced almonds and pistachios. Serve hot.

Add one tablespoon of besan to melted ghee before putting the ground moong dal.

So that there will not be lumps during cooking.
