Bunny Chow Recipe

Bunny chow is a South African street food.  Bunny chow is usually served in a quarter of a hollowed-out white loaf, but use bread rolls if you prefer.  You can fill it with meat curry,  beaf , chicken or bean curry.


1 loaf bread, white, unsliced, flat-topped
500 gm lamb mincebunny chow1
3 tablespoon curry powder
3 tbsp PnP tomato paste
1 tablespoon red chili powder
2 cups water
2 medium carrots, peeled and sliced
1 pinch salt and ground pepper
1 medium onion, diced
3 cloves granulated garlic, chopped
3 centimeters knob ginger, chopped
1 medium chilli, chopped (optional)
1 star anisebunny chow2
1 cinnamon stick
4 cardamom pods
2 tablespoon oil

For garnishing:

1 half onion, thinly sliced
2 medium tomatoes, seeded and diced
30 ml lemon juice
1 bunch coriander or basil leaves


Heat oil in a large pan and fry onions until soft. Add garlic, ginger, chilli, star anise, cinnamon, cardamom and fry for another minute add the tomatoes, and fry little bit.
